I am waaaay overdue for an update, but it's been super busy around here lately. So, I'll go ahead and recap all of last week's shenanigans.
MOnday was boring, just work. I did meet Cisco at an Irish pub to watch America vs. North Korea in the Women's World Cup. We won! :)
Tuesday after work we had to go visit an artist studio/gallery in Wedding. To be perfectly honest, I wasn't that impressed. There is a huge art scene in Berlin, but unfortunately that art scene also attracts a lot of talent-less, self important hipsters and their crappy so called "art". And that's the best way I could describe this warehouse-turned-art gallery. We walked into the warehouse and it was basically a giant sensory attack from all directions. Different artists had set up their pieces everywhere, but it lacked a flow and it just came off as chaotic. It didn't help that a lot of the stuff was just stupid. And believe me, I was trying to be open minded...
Now, don't get me wrong, there were a few interesting or inspiring pieces, and certainly some of the artists were pretty good, but a lot of things were just...not. I was so glad to get out of there and go home!
hipster!
guinea pigs made of socks..
Wednesday I worked and then went out that night with Chelsea (from IUSP in Marburg) and her Spanish friend Lucia. It was a fun girly night. A bachlorette party even came by (we were sitting outside) and they were making the bride to be sell silly things out of a basket. It had all sorts of random stuff-knickknacks, candy, mini bottles of schnapps, keychains, and even underwear (gross). The poor girl looked mortified so we took pity and bought something and congratulated her. It still looked fun though and apparently it's a German tradition so everyone was good natured about it.
Thursday I worked (as usual) but the weather took a nasty turn. It's been beautiful all week, and suddenly that day it got cold and disgusting. Of course, this is the day I choose to wear a dress and tights. After work we had to go visit this artist's studio, and my boss informs me I'll have to stand outside in the wind and rain and direct the guests to the showroom. It was freezing, we were in kind of a sketchy neighborhood, and only like 5 people showed up. I was irked, but hey, I made it. But thennnn I had to stick around for a 2 hour tour of one room...in German. It was interesting to hear the artist explain her work, but listening to German for two hours straight takes so much concentration I can't stay interested that long. It was 8pm before I was able to escape...but now I know how to say "paint" in German!
Friday was nice cause it was, well, Friday!
The weekend continued with sucky weather. I'd had a lot of plans to be outside and enjoy the sunshine but it just poured. American Boyfriend came to visit, and I had to assure him that it's not always raining in Berlin...we went to check out the outdoor market near my house, bought some jeans, escaped from the rain in Starbucks, and discovered an AMAZING Indian restaurant right next to my flat. Love it! That night we went out with Peter, Tommy, Maria, Jana, and Susan. Very German evening ;) They had been partying the night before, so they weren't so keen on staying out late. How very unGerman of them! But it was fun anyway.
Sunday it was still awful weather, but we went to the giant flea market at Mauer Park. That was pretty cool, as always. There's so much crazy stuff there. I even had some Turkish food...very good, though I admit I was skeptical at first. We also tried these amazing Lebanese desserts with honey and coconut and one with pistachios. Coupled with some hot mint tea-perfect! We sat in this weird, hipster run down wannabe beer garden to escape the rain, but it was really cool.
From there we went to the German History Museum. That was AMAZING. I totally nerded out. They even had a ton of historical clothes. I was like drooling over the display. They had so many Regency and 1830s clothes! I should've taken pictures...
Monday was Independence Day! The weather was still awful, cancelling any hopes my American friends and I had had to have a bbq or something. Chelsea and I decided to meet up for Mexican food and drinks (going to an American themed restaurant seemed corny). She invited her American friends from her program and I invited mine and we mingled and had weird what-Germans-think-is-Mexican food. It was good though. We had a few drinks together and then headed home.
Tuesday it was finally nice weather again! Work was work, but that night Chelsea came over and we watched the new episode of True Blood! Yay for having a fellow Truebie in Berlin :)
ok, now on to the exciting thigns this week...
