Weekend in Weimar

I know, I've got a LOT of catching up to do!
oh, Berlin :)

Ich bin ein Berliner!

So I'll start with the weekend!

Last weekend I ended up going to Weimar with the American guy I met the weekend before. He lives in a pretty boring town in the middle of Bavaria, so he travels a lot of weekends, and we both have the same problem of loving to travel but being without travel partners since we're new in town. When we were in Berlin we talked a lot about history since he studied it as well, so when he texted me about going to Weimar I was pretty interested. We had a very loose plan, but I hopped on the train Friday afternoon and headed towards Weimar.

I got there first and realized Weimar wasn't exactly a super happenin' place. It was cute though, and very historical. As much as I hate to admit it, history is not always as sexy and exciting as someone like me might like to think it is, but to be honest, a weekend of museums and historically important things is just as fun (to me) as a crazy party town. And since I live in a giant party city I thought maybe it'd be a nice change of pace :) I went to the tourist info office and got some information as well as the news that nearly all the hotels were booked in the city thanks to two conferences and a football game. Ruh roh!

While I waited for American Guy to get there I started calling hotels and hostels (and practicing my German haha) and found that the Info Lady was right. But after a lot of phone calls I managed to find something. yay! So, lodging taken care of, I met up with American Guy and we set out exploring the town and getting some dinner. It was really cute, really reminded me of Marburg in some ways (though Marburg's way cuter!). We walked around and found a choir practicing this really beautiful song and then like ten minutes later listened to someone practicing the organ in this old beautiful church. that was cool :)

Weimar is located in Thuringia, which is located in former East Germany. There were a lot of shops with GDR stuff-I bought a few pins for my collection. Saturday we visited the Marktplatz and saw the Saturday market. We visited the Bauhaus Museum, tried to visit a GDR era Art Gallery (it was closed) tried some weird Thuringian specialities, dodged the rain (it was pretty crazy weather the whole time) and eventually found a really awesome park with a lake and lots of ruins of old buildings. There was one I thought was pretty cool-it was basically the front of a cathedral, but the back was all gone. Dunno what happened to the rest.

he's a little camera shy

We walked for a long time since the park was huge, and afterwards we were pretty beat. We had dinner and then decided to have a few Thuringian beers in this random bar. Well, as soon as we sat down we realized it was an American themed bar...though I'm pretty sure we were the only Americans in there! After a while this German guy came up to us and asked if we could switch tables with them since they had a big group at a small table and we were sitting at a big one. We agreed, and the guy was super surprised I spoke German. They sent over two shots of tequilla for us to thank us, and even though we were like ughhh we hate tequilla it was a nice gesture so we were like, oh well, Prost!

Sunday we slept in late and then made our way to the train station. Weimar is so quiet and sleepy, it was kinda refreshing after Berlin where everything is go go go. So back on the train, back to Berlin...
